Baytril For Dogs Uses And Side Effects

Baytril is the brand name of enroflaxin, a fluoroquinolone antimicrobial medication produced by Bayer that is used to treat bacterial infections in animals. It is very commonly used in rodents such as rabbits and guinea-pigs, but can also be used in dogs. Use Enrofloxacin is used to treat 3 main areas of infections found in companion animals such as dogs; skin, respiratory and urinary tract. Being a broad-spectrum antibiotic, Baytril covers both gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial infections. Within urinary tract infections, the Baytril has shown good renal tolerance allowing acute and chronic infections to be managed effectively, including those where the prostrate is involved. Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia can be controlled quickly where Baytril has been used to inhibit the bacterial DNA gyrase. Baytril also helps to control any secondary bacterial infections that may occur. Inflamed tissue surrounding skin infections can be treated using Baytril as it has been found to be highly effective against the main bacteria that cause pyoderma, including Staphylococcus and Escherichia. While Baytril can be an oral solution, with dogs a vet will generally administer Baytril by either injection or tablet form. For ear infections, Baytril can also be given in the form of an ear drop known as Baytril Otic. Where fungal infections are a factor, a fungicidal medication will be necessary as well. Side Effects As with all medications, Baytril may show some side effects in some animals. Apart from where allergic reactions may occur, Baytril has shown to have no adverse effects regarding the kidneys and central nervous system in dogs. Many vets consider Baytril to be one of the more safer antimicrobials used in dogs. However, it is important to note that as with all antibiotics, it is possible for gastrointestinal side effects to occur include diarrhoea and vomiting. It is also possible that as a quinolone, cartilage within the joints of young and growing dogs, particularly puppies, can become eroded. However, it has been clarified that Baytril is still tolerated by puppies as young as 1 week old, as long as the medication is used in small and minimal doses. One side effect that has been noted in very rare cases is blindness, where Baytril has been used in the injection form. However this is very rare, and not usually a concern. As with all antibiotics there are safety issues surrounding the drug including toxicity where Baytril has been used over a long period of time. With this in mind, it is suggested that Baytril is used as a short-term antibiotic.
